Connection guides

Use local import for files on your device. SMB is a practical starting point for a computer or NAS at home. Choose WebDAV for an existing HTTPS file service, or connect your existing FolioSpace Library, Emby, Jellyfin or Plex server. Test a small video on your home network before trying high-bitrate or Blu-ray content.

iPhone, iPad, Mac and Vision Pro can import supported videos or folders through the system file picker. Apple TV has no equivalent local-file import; use a network source.

1. Put the video somewhere the device can access. Download cloud files first if needed.
2. Choose the video or folder import button in the library and grant access to that location. On Mac, you can also drag local files or folders into the library.
3. Open a video to play it. If the original moves, is deleted or becomes unavailable when a drive disconnects, select an accessible location again.

Use the file sharing built into macOS. Share the movie folder and give your playback account read access.

1. Open System Settings → General → Sharing and enable File Sharing.
2. Add your movie folder in File Sharing details and give the chosen account Read Only access.
3. In Options, enable SMB and the account that will connect. Note the share name and the Mac’s LAN address.
4. Keep the Mac online, then enter its details in FolioLume as described below.

Enable sharing on your trusted home network and use a named, password-protected account. Keep password protection enabled.

1. Use the Private network profile. Enable Network discovery and File and printer sharing in advanced sharing settings.
2. Right-click the movie folder in File Explorer → Show more options → Give access to → Specific people. Select an account with read access.
3. Note the PC’s LAN IP and share name. Use the account password, not a Windows Hello PIN.
4. Connect in FolioLume using smb://PC-IP/ShareName.

Open Sources and add a media source. Select a discovered device or choose manual entry, then select SMB. Enter the password separately from the URL.

1. Choose a name such as “Home Movies”. Enter smb://192.168.1.20/Movies as the server address, replacing the example.
2. Enter the share account’s username and password. Alternatively, enter only smb://192.168.1.20, choose Browse Shares and select a share.
3. Choose Connect and Add. After validation, browse files and add the videos you want to your library.
4. If share browsing returns nothing, enter the full share URL manually and check the account’s read permission.

You need a WebDAV file endpoint, not a NAS login page or a public sharing webpage. Use HTTPS with a trusted certificate and a dedicated account.

1. On Synology, install WebDAV Server from Package Center, enable HTTPS and note its port. The default HTTPS port is 5006; use your configured value.
2. Allow the account to use WebDAV and read the movie share. Configure a certificate that is trusted by your device and matches the server hostname.
3. Add a WebDAV source in FolioLume. Enter a name, file-service URL, username and password. Example: https://nas.example.com:5006/Movies/ — replace the domain, port and path.
4. Connect, browse a folder and test playback and seeking.

A working webpage does not prove that WebDAV listing or video byte-range requests work. A login redirect, path, certificate or proxy rule may be the cause.

1. Use the WebDAV endpoint and folder path, not the administration or login page.
2. Check that the hostname matches a certificate your device trusts. Fix the certificate rather than disabling verification.
3. Ask the administrator to allow directory listing with PROPFIND and file reads, including HTTP Range requests for playback and seeking.
4. For 401, check credentials; for 403, check permissions; for 404, check the path. A redirect to another domain can trigger credential protection.

FolioLume is a client. Add and scan your videos in an existing FolioSpace Library service first. Installing the player does not deploy a server.

1. Get the Library service’s base URL and access token from its administrator. Keep any reverse-proxy path prefix.
2. Add a FolioSpace source with a name, base URL and access token. Do not append a webpage route or /api/client/videos yourself.
3. Connect and browse the video library. If it is empty, check the server’s scan results and video access permissions.

Install the server on a computer or NAS, add your media folders and complete a scan. FolioLume uses an API key for its Emby / Jellyfin connection, not a web-login password. Compatibility depends on the server version and API.

1. Follow the server’s installation wizard to create an administrator and library. Confirm that movies appear in its web interface.
2. Have the administrator create a dedicated FolioLume key in the dashboard’s API keys section; its location varies by version.
3. Add an Emby / Jellyfin source. Enter the server base URL, such as http://192.168.1.20:8096 on your LAN. Keep a configured service prefix, but omit /web, index.html and webpage parameters.
4. Paste the API key into the key/token field and connect. FolioLume reads accessible original media, does not request server transcoding, and keeps playback progress on this device.

The current connection requires the Plex Media Server base URL and its X-Plex-Token, rather than a Plex username and password. It browses Plex movie libraries and requires access to the original media.

1. Install Plex Media Server using its official guide, create a movie library and finish its scan.
2. Follow Plex’s token guide to obtain X-Plex-Token from a movie’s XML information link in Plex Web. Treat it as a password; do not share it in screenshots.
3. Select Plex in FolioLume and enter the server base URL, such as http://192.168.1.20:32400 on your LAN. Do not enter app.plex.tv, a /web page or a URL containing the token.
4. Paste the token into the separate access-token field and connect. Playback uses original files; Plex transcoding and Plex watch-progress sync are not provided.

Discovery depends on a reachable local network and an advertised service. A server can still work when it is not discovered. Version 0.80 can discover advertised SMB and WebDAV services, plus Jellyfin and Plex where supported.

1. Keep the player and server on a network that allows them to communicate. Guest Wi-Fi, client isolation or separate VLANs can block discovery.
2. Allow FolioLume local-network access. On iPhone / iPad, check Settings → Privacy & Security → Local Network.
3. Confirm that the server and discovery service are running, then rescan. Containers or firewalls may pass playback traffic without passing discovery broadcasts.
4. Use manual entry with the known server address. Over a remote VPN, expect to use manual entry rather than discovery.

Make the connection work at home first. Then use a VPN you manage or a properly secured HTTPS service. FolioLume does not automatically expose your server to the internet.

1. Prefer a VPN that gives your device access to the home server. Confirm client availability and routing for the device you use.
2. Enter the VPN-reachable address manually. Do not forward SMB port 445 directly to the public internet.
3. For an HTTPS reverse proxy, configure a trusted certificate, authentication, the correct service path and byte-range support. Enter the URL and token separately.
4. Test your home connection’s upload speed. Remote high-bitrate playback depends on both ends of the connection.
